An interview with the only ESR working on the biological aspect of PAHs. Lindsey St. Mary is a toxicologist who works with Zebra fish and is also a passionate powerlifter. Any conversation with her is incomplete without the mention of Lilly, her pet dog, whom she took along with her when she moved to Edinburgh last September all the way across the Atlantic.
What did you study before becoming a part of EUROPAH?
I got my bachelor’s in Pre-Veterinary medicine at Oregon State University, and got my Master’s in Toxicology at North Carolina State University.
Where are you working now?
I am at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland working on my PhD with Theodore Henry.
What or who inspired you to follow this career path?
Two people really shaped me as a researcher, my former mentors at Oregon State University, Robert Tanguay and Lisa Truong. They always believed in me and supported me both in my bachelor’s and my master’s, and continue to do so now.
What is the best part of being a part of EUROPAH?
I not only love the topic of the projects involved in EUROPAH, but I really love all of my fellow ESRs and EUROPAH members. We all bring such interesting dynamics and knowledge to the group, but most importantly I consider all the ESRs my friends.
If you weren’t a scientist, what would you be?
If I didn’t do research, I would have gone to veterinary school. It’s still science, but that is the only other path I may have went down.
Which place did you grow up in? What do you like most about that place?
I grew up in Dallas, Texas. I miss the BBQ.
What do you like about Edinburgh?
I love all the historic sites and the feeling of Edinburgh, plus I love Haggis. I spend my free time hiking with Lilly.
The three words that describe me the best: Hardworking, passionate, and determined
My favourite sportsperson: Jason Witten, he is a tight-end for the Dallas Cowboys.
My pet peeve: When my PAH samples don’t go into solution
The first thing on my bucket list: Swim in a natural hot spring
My superpower: I can eat more than sumo wrestler
